National accolade for construction innovation
A new product developed by the Caparo Innovation Centre has scooped a silver medal at the British Invention of the Year Awards 2009.
The Bricklayer’s Column Clamp, which provides a quick and easy way for bricklayers to set-out the brickwork around steel framed structures, was invented by Derek Morris who partnered with the Caparo Innovation Centre at the University of Wolverhampton to develop the product.
The clamp won a silver medal in the Industrial Innovation category at the show at Alexandra Palace in London.
Andrew Pollard, Industrial Professor at the Caparo Innovation Centre, said: “We feel very proud that this innovation has been recognised at a national level. The product offers builders the opportunity to operate more quickly without compromising the level of accuracy employed.”
The Bricklayer’s Column Clamp is currently subject to a collaboration agreement with a potential manufacturer, under which the product is being readied for launch.
The new tool helps the bricklayer set out his line guide directly from the architects drawings and the line doesn’t need setting again until the wall is completed.
